October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month!

At Aztec Spirulina, we're all about empowering you to take charge of your health and well-being. This month, we stand together in the fight against breast cancer.

We're excited to share a 5-Step Guide to Effective Breast Self-Examination because caring for your health starts with you! Stay tuned for our easy-to-follow steps that can make a difference. Remember, early detection saves lives.

Step 1. Choose the Right Time:
Perform your self-exam a few days after your menstrual period ends when your breasts are likely less tender. If you are post-menopausal, select a consistent day each month.

Step 2. Visual Inspection:
Stand in front of a mirror with your shoulders straight and your arms at your sides. Look for any visible changes in the size or shape of your breasts. Check for: swelling, dimpling or puckering of the skin, changes in the nipple (inversion, discharge, or alterations in its position), raise your arms overhead and inspect your breasts for any changes again.

Step 3. Manual Examination (while standing or lying down):
Choose a position: You can perform this either while standing (in the shower) or lying down. Lying down may help you feel the tissue more clearly. Use the right technique: use the pads of your fingers (not your fingertips) to feel for lumps. Move your fingers in a circular motion and cover the entire area of the breast, including: the outer part of the breast, the inner parts, including the armpit area (axillary tail), the area near the collarbone

Step 4. Patterns to Use:
There are different patterns you can follow: (1) circular Pattern: Start at the outer edge and move inward in small circles; (2) Up-and-Down Pattern: Start at the top and move down vertically like you are mowing the lawn; (3) Spiral Pattern: Begin at the nipple and work your way outward in a spiral.

Step 5. Check for Changes:
Feel for any unusual lumps, hard knots, or masses. Even benign lumps should be reported to your healthcare provider. If you notice any changes, such as persistent pain, lumps, or any other concerns, schedule a visit with your doctor.

Self-examinations are an essential part of breast health. While they do not replace regular screenings and professional care, they empower you to take charge of your breast health. Share this guide with friends and family to raise awareness about breast cancer and the importance of early detection!
